Miura City is seeing the first signs of the approaching spring with the arrival of kawazusakura cherry blossoms.
Kawazusakura blossoms are an early-blooming variety of Japan’s favorite flower, different from the popular cherry blossom (Somei Yoshino) you’ll see in late March.
Along a stretch between Misakiguchi and Miurakaigan Stations on the Keikyu line, you’ll find gorgeous early magenta blooms ringing in the season. Komatsugaike Pond in the area is another spot to enjoy the kawazusakura and will have food and game booths to welcome visitors during the season.
Yellow canola flowers are also starting to bloom under the hundreds of Kawazusakura trees lined along the stretch and around the pond, making an impressive contrast to red-pinkish blossoms of cherry blossoms.
At Keikyu Miurakaigan Station Square, the Miurakaigan Sakura Festival is running now through March 2. The event includes night tree illumination, food and shopping booths. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Yokosuka Naval Base.
Spring is just around the corner, so let’s go out and enjoy all the beauty and fun activities!
