Established in 1899, Shikairo Chinese restaurant is known as the birthplace of “champon.” This Nagasaki delicacy is truly delicious. It consists of fat egg noodles with lots of vegetables, fried pork and seafood in a pork broth.

The restaurant is always crowded with locals and visitors on weekends – a testament to its champon which sells for 972 yen ($8.45) a bowl and is very rich and loaded with fresh seafood and vegetables.

It is said that the dish was invented for Chinese students studying in Japan that longed for a taste of home. That taste was so good, it turned out, that it eventually became popular with locals in Nagasaki and elsewhere in Japan.
