JAPAN

Yakiniku is the Japanese word for Korean barbecue, and in Japan, this is a popular meal to enjoy with friends and family.

Nothing beats grilling your favorite cuts of meat at your table and digging into a bowl of rice and kimchi. In Japan, yakiniku is considered a Korean dish, where people grill beef, pork, chicken or other meats with corn, mushrooms and other veggies on a griddle or gridiron, and then dip the food into Korean-flavored miso or soy-sauce based broth. Yakiniku is so revered in Japan that it has earned its own day in celebration.

August 29 is Yakiniku no hi, the day to enjoy and celebrate barbecued meat. The numbers of the date 8, 2 and 9 can be read in Japanese as “ya,” “ni,” “ku” leading the All-Japan Yakiniku Association to designate the day as Yakiniku Day in 1993.

According to the association, this day is a perfect time of the summer season to have barbecued meat to get energy to beat the heat. I agree that the tender, sizzling grilled meats sure will recharge us in the scorching summer.

On Aug. 29 be on the lookout for special discounts and deals at yakiniku restaurants near you. And, for an authentic taste, visit Tokyo’s Shin-Okubo (Koreatown) district or Kawasaki City to get in on the grilling action!
