Buffet-style Korean barbecue. To some, the idea of endless grilled meats is about as good as it gets.

Luckily for those located near NAF Atsugi and Camp Zama, Viking Restaurant Great Sagamino offers exactly that.

Just a 12-minute drive from the two installations, Great Sagamino has the meats, as well as other dishes at a reasonable price and in a military-friendly environment.

Since it was established 18 years ago, the restaurant has been attracting customers with more than 140 items, such as sushi, seafood, curry and other a-la-carte dishes, along with various dessert, fruits, salads, and of course, tasty cuts of beef and pork for the Korean style barbecue.

“A Korean-style iron grill is installed on each table and you can grill various slices of meat right at your table,” says Naohiro Terasawa, general manager of the restaurant. “We always slice the meat before serving, so you can enjoy fresh meat all the time.”

If meat isn’t your thing, Terasawa said there are many other options, including ramen.

“Besides all of the barbecue meat, you can make your own ramen by choosing your favorite ingredients,” Terasawa said.

Great Sagamino is English-friendly, with an English menu and staffers who can speak it as well.

According to Terasawa, American service members from NAF Atsugi and Camp Zama frequent the restaurant and often use it for gatherings.

“There are 220 seats in the restaurant, which is one of the largest around,” Terasawa said. “Because of our size, we’re able to prepare any type of table setting depending on the size of party.”

Great Sagamino has another restaurant in Ayase (Great Ayase), only a 5-minute drive from NAF Atsugi. While both restaurants are similar, the menu items are slightly different.

Reservations can be made for parties of 10 or more. Shuttle bus service between base gates and the restaurant is available for parties of 15 or more with the purchase of the 90-minute course.

From 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, the 90-minute all-you-can-eat course is the same price as the 60-minute course.

Price range: Lunch (60 min.): 1,450 yen (Mon.-Fri.), 1,600 yen (Sat., Sun. and holidays); Dinner (60 min.): 2,300 yen (everyday)

*Special prices for group, children and seniors.
