Located in the mountaneous district near Aizuwakamatsu City in Fukushima Pref., Ouchijuku is a well-preserved example of the post towns established during Edo era (1603-1867). Many of the lived-in thatched-roofed houses in the town have remained largely unchanged since their construction around 400 years ago. Shops for souvenirs, local delicacies as well as hotels and restaurants are housed in the traditional houses. Thousands of visitors flock to the area to enjoy the unique traditional atmosphere that post town must offer. Ouchijuku was designated as one of the preserved traditional building districts by the Government of Japan in 1981.
