Aomori City is only 40 miles west of Misawa Air Base, and it is an area known and holding records for its many orchards producing 446,000 tons of apples annually, and its heavy snowfall of up to 60 inches per year. Attractions in the city include memorial ship Hakkoda-maru, a museum, the 250-foot pyramid-shaped Aomori Prefecture Tourist Center, which gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the city from its 13th floor observatory. Drop by Warasse, a unique building that houses a museum and civic center where you can take a close look at Aomori’s traditional “nebuta” lantern floats that are crafted for the festival of the same name.
