Lake Towada is a popular tourist destination in Aomori Prefecture. And at less than a two-hour-drive from Misawa Air Base, this area is a great spot for when you’re looking to go out the gate and take in the spectacular scenery.

The fall season here is especially famous due to the brilliant red, yellows and oranges the trees put on during this time of year contrasting the crystal blue waters of the impressive lake.

As though you needed any more reasons to visit Lake Towada, there will be illuminations this year for FeStA LuCe 2021-2022!

Through Nov. 23, visitors will be treated to illuminations in the theme of “The story of Autumn Leaves in Light.” If you miss that illumination, don’t worry, “The story of Winter in Light” starts Dec. 4 through Feb. 20, event promotors announced.

Both illumination stories revolve around the legend of Lake Towada. According to the legend, an evil monster serpent with eight heads used to wreak havoc in the lake waters until a monk came there to fight and sent the serpent away with his mighty faith. The monk was then said to have shape-shifted into a dragon to become the lake’s guardian deity.

During the winter portion in December, visitors can also look forward to beautiful fireworks displays on weekends and holidays starting at 8 p.m.

‘Tis the season for cold weather, beautiful fall foliage and breathtaking illuminations, so make plans to attend this wonderous event!
