Ueno is a great area to visit in Tokyo. Here you’ll find Japan’s oldest zoo, tons of museums, a French-style modern park filled with cherry trees, and numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.

Ueno is a couple hours away by train from any of the U.S. military installations in the Kanto Plain, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. During spring, Ueno becomes a very popular spot to view cherry blossoms.

But Ueno is also a center for arts and sciences. Here, the Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Museum of Nature and Science and the National Museum of Western Art draw in visitors wanting to enjoy the cultural side of the district.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will be hosting the “International Art Exchange Exhibition,” a free exhibit featuring over 250 artworks from around 30 countries, from April 10-15.

During the exhibition, you can see sculptures of SDGs artist Peter Hires, a Napa Valley wine owner in San Francisco who created a sculpture with car-tires and wires that were found along California highways, and floral oil paintings by California medical worker Janai Ami, who adopted a lot of dogs. You’ll also enjoy the paintings of Mario Fois from Sardina Island, Italy, and Grace Tjon Dron Impuno from Bali, who applied an Indonesian “tropical peaceful touch” into her work.

There will also be around 150 works by American artists on display, according to officials.

Go for the cherry blossoms and stay for the arts and culture in Ueno this spring!
