Hydrangeas, known as ajisai in Japanese, are beloved flowers that bloom abundantly during the rainy season around June. The vibrant hues of blue, pink, and purple create picturesque landscapes, and various festivals are held when the flowers are at their best.

One such festival is the Yanagidani Kannon Hydrangea Week, which in actuality is a month-long affair celebrating the colorful blooms. In addition to the 5000 hydrangeas at their peak on the grounds, there will be seasonal hydrangea goshuin (shrine stamps) and hydrangea-filled hanachozu (the water-filled basins used to purify yourself before entering a shrine or temple). If you don't already have a shrine stamp book, hydrangea-themed ones will also be available for purchase.

Admission to the event is priced at ¥700.

GETTING THERE Yanagidani Kannon (also known as Yōkoku-ji Temple) is located approximately 10 minutes driving time from the Nagaokakyo Interchange on the Kyoto Jukan Expressway. Paid on-site parking is available.
