While lower portions of mainland Japan are expecting the arrival of cherry blossoms any day now, Misawa in the north still has a few more weeks of frigid temperatures to endure.

Tiny yellow fukujuso, also known as Far East Amur Adonis, flowers are blooming in the area, bringing with them some spring cheer. Yoshihito Morita, an employee at the Misawa Commissary, said that his home garden in Tohokucho Town, near Misawa Air Base, is covered in the golden blooms.

Temperatures in the area have been slow to warm and the heaviest snow of the year in early March delayed the fukujuso this year, Morita said.

Fukujuso flowers bloom in the early spring and are unique in that the blossoms open only when the sun shines directly at them. As the sun sets, the fukujuso flowers close for the evening.

Tulips and narcissus blossoms follow the flower in the region, and Hakkoda Goldline, which is currently closed due to piled snow will reopen in April. Other upcoming spring events include the area cherry blossom festivals and Japan Day at the Misawa Club on April 6.

Spring seems to be just around the corner in Misawa, as well. Stay safe and warm, Misawa!
