Athens Pellegrino family

(Athens Pellegrino)

It’s a bright afternoon in Okinawa, and Athens E. Pellegrino, the CEO and founder of Military Family Life Publishing LLC, greets me with a warm smile. Surrounded by books and the lively chatter of families, the scene feels like a perfect backdrop for a conversation about her inspiring journey. As we dive into her story, it’s evident that her passion for serving military families goes far beyond the pages of her books.

A Story Born from Challenge

When I asked Athens about the origins of her business, her eyes lit up with a mix of pride and nostalgia.

“It was May 2020,” she begins, “and the pandemic had turned our world upside down. My son, Atticus, was just 19 months old, and I was preparing for a PCS (Permanent Change of Station) to Tampa, Florida, while being very pregnant with my daughter, Callista.” She pauses thoughtfully, as if reliving the chaos of that time. “I wanted to ease Atticus’s transition, but I couldn’t find any children’s books that addressed military moves. So, I wrote one myself: MISSION: MY FIRST PCS.”

That book, which began as a personal project to comfort her son, became the cornerstone of her business. “The more I thought about it,” Athens shares, “the more I realized how many families could benefit from stories like these. That’s when I decided to establish Military Family Life Publishing LLC and create The Military Child Chronicles series.”

Building a Business During a Pandemic

Launching a business during the height of COVID-19 was no small feat.

“It was risky,” Athens admits, “and in-person marketing plans were almost impossible. Instead, I pivoted to a virtual approach.” Her adaptability paid off. She appeared on news segments virtually, guested on over 20 podcasts, and pre-recorded story times for schools across the globe. “The pandemic forced me to think creatively,” she says. “It taught me resilience, a lesson I’ve carried into every aspect of my business.”

Moments That Matter

Athens’s voice softens as she recounts two pivotal moments in her journey.

“After the launch of my first book, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave me a shout-out on Facebook,” she recalls. “It was surreal to see that level of recognition.”

Another moment came shortly after arriving at Kadena Air Base. “I was working at a small business pop-up event when a family approached me,” she says, her smile widening. “The mother had my books in her bag and asked if I could sign them. She explained how much they had helped her family during their PCS to Kadena. That’s when I truly felt the impact of what I was doing.”

Serving the Military Community

What sets Athens apart is her deep connection to her audience.

“I’ve lived this life,” she says. “As a 15-year military spouse, Command Spouse, mother, and DoD employee, I’ve experienced 12 PCSes, including two international moves. Every topic I write about comes from personal experience.”

Her dedication extends beyond her books. Athens has donated copies of her series to schools, hosted in-person story times, and even served as the Guest of Honor at a Marine Air Control Group Children’s Ball. Her contributions to the local community of Okinawa have created awareness of the unique challenges military families face.

Looking Ahead

Athens’s future plans are as ambitious as her beginnings.

“I’m expanding The Military Child Chronicles to include books for older audiences,” she reveals.

“I also have upcoming projects I’m excited to share.”

For now, she invites readers to follow her journey on social media to stay updated on what’s next.

Words of Wisdom

When I ask Athens for advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, she’s quick to respond: “Stay motivated and don’t let others’ opinions get in the way of your goals. Believe in what you’re doing.”

A Lasting Impact

As our conversation wraps up, it’s clear that Athens Pellegrino’s work is more than just a business; it’s a heartfelt mission. Through her books and community efforts, she’s making a tangible difference in the lives of military families around the world.
