The rhythmic hum of sublimation machines fills the air in a cozy workspace nestled in Okinawa, Japan. Jessica Lewis, owner of Craft Junkie, greets me with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm that speaks to her love for crafting. Her demeanor radiates the creativity and dedication that have built her business into a beloved community hub. Over coffee, we dive into the inspiring story of Craft Junkie and the woman behind it.
From Passion to Purpose
Jessica’s journey began during the global pandemic in 2021. Like many, she found herself searching for a creative outlet during uncertain times. “I have always enjoyed crafting,” Jessica shares. “During Covid, I began to learn the process of sublimation and met some amazing small business owners here in Okinawa. Their encouragement gave me the push to turn my passion into a business.”
Fast forward to today, Craft Junkie specializes in custom sublimation on items such as tumblers, keychains, coasters, ornaments, and blankets. For Jessica, it’s not just about the products. “It’s about creating custom memories for anyone,” she explains.
Building a Business Rooted in Community
As a Marine spouse for 20 years, Jessica’s life has been marked by numerous moves and transitions. Yet, Okinawa has offered a sense of stability and community. “Finally having some roots here, I took the chance to share my ideas with the community,” she says. “Understanding how hard it can be to be so far from family makes the opportunity to create something special even more rewarding.”
Her target audience is primarily military families, looking to preserve memories of their time in Okinawa. Jessica’s own experiences as a military spouse provide her with unique insight into their needs and desires, making her products deeply personal and impactful.
Overcoming Challenges
Like many small business owners, Jessica faced hurdles in building Craft Junkie. “Limited resources and gaining exposure in the community were big challenges,” she recalls. But her perseverance paid off, thanks to word-of-mouth recommendations and active engagement in community events. Jessica’s flexibility and patience when working with clients set her apart, earning her a loyal customer base.
Crafting Joy and Giving Back
One of the most rewarding aspects of Jessica’s work is witnessing her customers’ joy. “Seeing the joy on people’s faces when they receive their items to send home to family members around the globe is unforgettable,” she says. Craft Junkie also plays a vital role in the local community, teaming up with schools and military-related establishments for fundraising events. “No matter the season, we’re always looking for ways to give back,” she adds.
Looking Ahead
The future of Craft Junkie is bright. Jessica is eager to expand her services and explore new forms of media. “All updates are announced on our social media pages,” she notes, inviting customers to follow along for the latest offerings.
Her advice for aspiring business owners? “Embrace and support those around you, and they will do the same. Collaborate with senior businesspeople on projects that highlight the community and never slow down.”
