Japan’s washoku is a designated UNESCO Intangible World Cultural Heritage. This genre of food offers a Japanese twist on French and Italian dishes and includes some fan-favorites like Napolitan pasta, hamburg and omurice. In 2021, the Japan Times launched the “Destination Restaurant” project, to spotlight 10 superb restaurants per year with articles in English.
Though you may think high-end, high-rated restaurants are only found in Tokyo, the project aims to focus on lesser-known spots in the Japanese countryside and smaller towns.
This year, the project has now expanded to “The Japan Times Destination Restaurants: Authentic Japan Selection 2021-2024,” a book featuring over 160 pages of stunning photographs, maps and other information on 31 amazing restaurants around the country.
