YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- Over a four-day period in November, Yokota High School administered 144 Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery Career Exploration Program tests to students in grades 10-12.
The ASVAB CEP identifies students’ skills and interests, providing students with an opportunity to explore career and post-secondary options as well as various college major and career field pathways.
“I took it to find out what I know; to see my strong career paths or subjects,” said Braedon Raybon, a YHS student. “I can find a career that’s financially stable and keeps me entertained and happy working.”
Colleen McDougall, YHS Information Specialist, said more than 72% of the eligible 10th through 12th grade students at YHS elected to take the ASVAB CEP. McDougall attributed strong student interest in ASVAB CEP to faculty encouragement, student word-of mouth, and parents embracing this opportunity.
“I took it again to improve on the sections that I am most interested in, like math, science and language arts,” said Trinity Stegall, a YHS student. “It’s helpful to see if my scores fit the majors I’m planning.”
“It can show you a path based on your strengths,” said Zane Gutierrez, an Air Force Junior ROTC Cadet. “Take it and find your career for your future!”
The ASVAB CEP supports Department of Defense Education Activity’s blueprint for Continuous Improvement Strategic Initiative 1.2, “Successful Transition to College, Career, and Life” by providing possible matching careers, highlighting academic strengths, and offering an interest inventory, along with career exploration tools that students can discuss with parents.
Armed with an understanding of their skills, these components give young people the confidence to map out a post-secondary plan that aligns with their individual skills and interests.
According to U.S. Military Entrance Processing Command, the ASVAB CEP is the only career planning resource that allows students to explore multiple paths to success – college, certificates, apprenticeships, licensure programs, or the Military – in one place.
