In Japan, you may have heard of “morning service,” a special offering at kissaten coffee shops dating back to the 1960s in Nagoya City. This service gives incudes a light breakfast with coffee purchase. The display of gratitude from local coffee shops was beloved by locals and soon, the custom expanded beyond Nagoya.

After a family vacation to Nagoya years ago, my daughter fell in love with morning service and has since made it a rule to start her days off with it at kissaten in her neighborhood.

On Jan. 3, to start the new year off right, my wife and I joined our daughter for morning service at Miyama Coffee near Ofuna Station in Kamakura City.

Frankly, it was not easy finding a coffee shop open in the early morning of New Year’s holiday, but my daughter searched with her iPhone and finally found Miyama Coffee near JR Ofuna Station. Miyama has a great reputation for serving a generous spread of morning service treats.

When we entered the coffee shop just before 8 a.m., the spacious, stylish interior was already abuzz with dozens of regulars. We were seated at a large table overlooking the quiet street below.

Miyama’s menu offered a cup of coffee for 550 yen accompanied with a complimentary toast and boiled egg. For an additional 390 yen, you could upgrade the toast to a ham and egg sandwich or for 320 yen, you could add a mini salad and corn soup. We chose the three options and shared them.

Despite the impressive complimentary menu, we weren’t expecting to have a hearty meal with our coffee. However, when our order arrived, we were surprised with large slices of toasted bread, large sandwiches in a large basket, and generous servings of salad and soup.

The dark roasted coffee was the perfect elixir to wake me up after a barrage of end-of-year parties. Our morning service was enough to make the three of us full and satisfied.

After the budget-friendly meal, we were satisfied, re-energized and ready to head out for our first family tour around Kamakura City.

If you’re around the Kamakura area in the early morning, drop by Miyama Coffee for a generous, tasty morning service to start your day, or year, right with this beloved Nagoya tradition!
