Did you see children in beautiful traditional attire visiting with their proud parents to a Shinto shrine or Buddhist temple?

This forms part of the “shichigosan” or seven-five-three celebration. In Japan, girls ages 3 and 7 and boys at age 5 visit the temple or shrine either on Nov. 15 or within the time frame as part of the Shichigosan tradition to ward off evil spirits and wish for a long and healthy life.

Today’s Japanese phrase is: "Shichi-go-san omedeto!" = Congratulations on your seven-five-three celebration!

For more about this Japanese tradition, see our article "7-5-3: Japanese autumn festival to celebrate children’s growth".

Let's congratulate proud children in traditional attire and their parents with this Japanese phrase. They sure will be very delighted!

Stay safe and enjoy rich autumn Japanese tradition!
