MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan -- Team Misawa members participated in the annual Fire Prevention Week here Oct. 7 to 13.

Throughout the week, 35th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighters taught children, adults and teachers more about fire safety.

“This function allows us to educate the entire base on ways to be fire safe,” said Staff Sgt. Samuel Taylor, the 35th CES fire prevention NCO in charge. “For me, personally, I enjoy teaching the base populace ways to prevent incidents from happening. For some people, this week might be the only time they attend a fire safety demonstration.”

The event is a public fire safety observance sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association. Annually, the NFPA creates a unique campaign slogan to help educate the community on safety concepts and commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred Oct. 8, 1871. The disaster killed 250 people and burned more than 17,400 buildings.

While learning various new facts about avoidance, Airman 1st Class Justice Jacoby, a 35th CES heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration journeyman, said he enjoyed the fire station open house the most.

“One of my favorite parts was the open house because I got to see everything firefighters do but more in depth than I originally thought,” Jacoby explained. “Everything they do amazes me and is really inspiring.”

The fire department wanted attendees to walk away with new information while remembering the year’s slogan.

“‘Look. Listen. Learn. Fire can happen anywhere’ is this year’s slogan. I want it to resonate with people, so they apply it in their home life,” said Taylor. “Everyone should be cognizant of fire risks in their homes and do everything possible to prevent such incidents from happening.”
