A copperplate print created by a Yokosuka Naval Base employee has been selected by the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition for display in a Tokyo art museum.
Miho Onodera works on base as an asset manager of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command but practices her art on her off time. Onodera’s specialty is copperplate printing, a demanding art form with a process that has not changed much since the 15th Century.
Onodera’s work “Kurosshippo Shoten” (Black-tail Bookstore) was among the 78 selected out of 3,520 entries by the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition.
All the selected works are currently displayed during the “2024 Bologna Illustrators Exhibition” at Itabashi Art Museum in Tokyo through August 12.
Last year, the Yokosuka native displayed of 30 copperplate print works depicting manga-like animals for a solo exhibition in Tokyo.
Onodera credits her cross-cultural work environment as a source of inspiration for her art and even uses her artistic talents for creating signboards and illustrations for her workplace.
