Although Tsukiji Market wrapped up its 83 years of history in October 2018 when Tokyo’s new wholesale fish market opened on the artificial island of Toyosu, its outer market called “Tsukiji Jogaishijo” is still active with hundreds of shops of wholesalers and retailers providing vast amounts of seafood and vegetables while countless sushi bars, food stalls and restaurants offer tastes of traditional Tokyo-style foods. The district remains as a popular tourist attraction, even after Toyosu took over.

My wife and I recently dropped by the district to take a stroll through the streets. Because we arrived around 3 p.m., many shops were already closed. But there were dozens of sushi restaurants and seafood and vegetable shops open while vendors on the street sold fresh produce.

At Tsukiji Namiyoke Jinja, a tiny old Shinto shrine located at the end of the Tsukiji district, we observed priests preparing for New Year’s by hanging up various sacred straw festoons on the shrine building and in the garden.

A stroll through the Tsukiji Outer Market will give glimpse into one of the world’s oldest seafood and insight into the culinary scene of Japan!
