For a limited time, Super Mario and friends are coming to Tokyo Station for a winter illumination display you can’t miss.

Marunouchi Bright Holiday 2024 promises lots of lights and photo ops in and around a couple of buildings in the area that Nintendo fans will love.

The illuminations will run through Jan. 13 at Marubiru (Marunouchi Building), Shin Marubiru (New Marunouchi Building), Marunouchi Oazo, Marunouchi Brick Square and Marunouchi Terrace.

The buildings feature light displays with different characters of the Mario Bros. franchise like Princess Peach, Yoshi, Kinopio, Mario and Luigi.

The centerpiece of the event is a 13-meter-tall “Super Mario Powerup Illumination,” which is illuminated all day from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. The piece also has an evening light show that runs every 15 minutes from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The event also includes a stamp rally activity for 200 yen (or about $1.33) to win a special prize, and Super Mario goods will be available for purchase. Visit the website for more information.

Also in the area, Marunouchi Illuminations run along the whole of the 1.2-kilometre-long Marunouchi Naka-dori street through Feb. 25. This is one of Tokyo’s most famous illumination displays, featuring hundreds of trees that line the street and sections closed off to traffic making it pedestrian and photo friendly. The Marunouchi Illumination display is not related to the Super Mario Bros. event.

Illuminations are a winter favorite in Japan, and you’ll find displays all around the country’s parks, shopping centers and theme parks throughout the season. These events draw crowds looking to enjoy the cold weather and brilliant light displays. Add this one-of-a-kind display to your holiday itinerary!
