Tokyo residents and travelers, beware! Due to major construction work at JR Shibuya Station, train operations on the JR Yamanote line between Osaki and Ikebukuro stations in Tokyo will partially be closed on Nov. 18-19.

The stations affected are Osaki, Gotanda, Meguro, Ebisu, Shibuya, Harajuku, Yoyogi, Shinjuku, Shin-Okubo, Takadanobaba, Mejiro and Ikebukuro.

This construction is to raise the tracks and platforms of the Shibuya Station 20 centimeters, so that the passageways under the railways can be rearranged as a flat and more spacious station concourse. As a result of the construction, the new concourse of more than 2.6-meter high and 20-meter wide will make the Shibuya Station and surrounding facilities safer and more attractive, according to the spokesman of JR East. About 4,600 workers will be engaged in the scheduled major construction.

Suspension of service

Nov. 18 (the entire day) from Osaki to Ikebukuro Stations (clockwise service or "outer loop") in Tokyo

Nov. 19 (the entire day) from Ikebukuro to Osaki Station (counterclockwise service or “inner loop”) in Tokyo

The rest of the stations along the Yamanote will remain in service, but the frequency of trains will be reduced to 70 percent of usual service. To compensate for the inconvenience, those traveling with a JR commuting pass or train ticket may use the Tokyo Metro, Toei line, Tokyu line and others in the affected areas instead.

Construction on and around Shibuya Station is expected to be completed by 2027.
