Monkey Island, or Sarushima in Japanese, is the largest uninhabited natural island in Tokyo Bay. The island is located a mile off Yokosuka Naval Base and is considered by locals to be the symbol of the city.
You can visit the island by simply hopping on the ferry at Mikasa Park, which is located right next to the base.
Standing on the island, you can enjoy a panoramic view of central Yokosuka and the naval base.
The island is small, so you can tour around for a couple of hours. You can even borrow a free walking stick near the visitors shop to help you walk up the steep steps to the fort.
Strolling along the peaceful route, you will see old powder magazines and barracks made of brick. In fact, the island was first fortified in 1847 and was used by the Japanese military until the end of World War II. Today, these fort facilities are designated as a historical site by the Japanese government.
The pristine green forest and the military ruins gives the island a mysterious look and has the feeling of an ancient civilization.
