Even semi-tropical islands like Okinawa can get chilly sometimes. In 1977, sleet came down on Kume Island, one of the remote islands west of Okinawa’s mainland. The same phenomenon happened in Nago city in 2016 as well. Meteorology-wise, sleet is categorized as snow, so both occurrences are referred to as the times it “snowed” on Okinawa.
