The summer heat is reaching peak levels and many are heading to the coast in search of an escape from the steamy city.

Misawa Veedol Beach is only a short 30-minute drive from Misawa Air Base and is a popular spot to cool down in the scorching summer.

The sandy shore is named after “Miss Veedol,” an airplane which took off from this very spot to complete the first non-stop flight over the Pacific Ocean to Wenatchee, WA in 1931.

The historical location is open to beachgoers, replete with showers, restroom facilities and on-duty lifeguards from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through September 1. There’s also a large free parking lot, so spending the day enjoying the sea breeze won’t be a hassle.

Nearby, the Pacific Observation Tower and Miss Veedol Memorial Park offer more on the history of the area and even a replica of the famous plane.

Take a break from the rising temperatures and enjoy a bit of fun, and maybe even some history, at Veedol Beach near Misawa.
