Okinawa has its own style of sumo wrestling. Unlike that of mainland Japan, “Okinawa Sumo” is fought between wrestlers in judo uniforms instead of a sumo belt. Each bout is decided when both shoulders of either wrestler touch the ground. This Okinawan martial art dates back to the times of the Ryukyu Kingdom (1429 -1879).
