A day trip to Hakone brings fun

One of the advantages of living in Japan is having the opportunity to go sightseeing without having to travel too far. So, when my husband and I were looking for a quick, easy and inexpensive day trip to take, we decided on Hakone.

This place was by far one of my favorite day trips we have taken while living in this beautiful country. Hakone was a little over a one-hour drive from Camp Zama and was easy to find.

The first stop on our trip was the highly recognizable torii gate that sits in Lake Ashi. This was the first torii I’ve seen in person that was partially submerged in water. The view of Lake Ashi along with the torii was spectacular. the area had a serene and peaceful energy that made me appreciate the view even more. The torii location is also a great photo opportunity for group photos and selfies.

The second and final stop in Hakone was Owakudani, also known as the “Great Boiling Valley.” Not only does Owakudani have a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji, but it is also a live volcanic valley. Guests visiting the area will see steam rising through the vents that are disseminated throughout the mountain.

Owakudani is known for its famous black eggs (called kurotamago in Japanese). The unique eggs just regular eggs that have been boiled and steamed in hot sulfurous water for over an hour. This process causes a chemical reaction that results in the egg shells turning black. Although the outer appearance of the egg is altered, the taste inside remains the same. Legend states that consuming of one black egg will lengthen a person’s life by seven years.

From my experience, Hakone was the perfect day trip. We were able to visit a new place that was not too far of a drive, see beautiful views and try food that we’ve never had before. If you are looking for an inexpensive trip that is a drivable distance, Hakone is the perfect place to see.
