Curry is one of Yokosuka’s signature dishes. The hearty dish consisting of stewed meat and vegetables in a brown sauce and served with a side of rice, is a favorite among locals and tourists.
In history, the former Japanese Imperial Navy had a tradition of serving curry and rice on weekends. Succeeding the tradition, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels who ported at Yokosuka still serve crews curry and rice every Friday. The city developed its Yokosuka Kaigun (Navy) Curry and declared itself Japan’s curry capital in 1999.
With such a history, it is no wonder that the city would also host a curry fest to celebrate the delicious dish! This year’s Yokosuka Curry Festival will be hosted at Mikasa Park on May 18-19.
The spacious park will be divided into the areas of Yokosuka Curry (32 food booths), JMSDF vessel Curry (5 food booths), and curries of popular restaurants from all over the nation (45 food booths), along with an outdoor stage for live music and entertainment. Plus, four local bakeries join the event by offering their unique curry-flavored buns.
Curry tickets (4 for 1,000 yen or 7 tickets for 1,500 yen) will be available at the venue and can be exchanged for servings of curry at any booth.
During this period, discounted prices are applied to admission to the memorial ship Mikasa (300 yen) and Sarushima Island (Monkey Island) ferry fares (1,700 yen).
Make plans to check out the curry festival for your own pleasant local food experience!
