Shirley Lanham Elementary School (SLES), home of the Crusaders, marked the beginning of the Month of the Military Child with a heartfelt and inspiring opening ceremony on April 11, 2025. This event kicks off a month-long series of activities dedicated to honoring the military-connected students at SLES.

The ceremony commenced with the presentation of the Japanese and American colors by the Zama Middle-High School JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Color Guard. The sight of the flags being carried with precision and pride set a respectful tone for the event.

Following the presentation of colors, the Zama Middle-High School Choir performed the national anthems of Japan and the United States. Their harmonious rendition of both anthems was a poignant reminder of the strong bond between the two nations and the shared values of the military community.

The Shirley Lanham Elementary School Student Ambassadors then led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Their confident voices echoed through the hall, instilling a sense of unity and patriotism among all attendees.

Adding to the spirit of the ceremony, the Shirley Lanham Elementary School Choir led the school song, filling the room with enthusiasm and school pride. The choir’s performance was a testament to the vibrant and supportive community at SLES.

A particularly touching moment was the reading of “The Dandelion - Flower of the Military Child” poem by the Shirley Lanham Elementary School Student Council Members. The poem, symbolizing the resilience and strength of military children, resonated deeply with the audience.

The Military Child Creed, also read by the Student Council Members, further highlighted the unique challenges and triumphs faced by military-connected students. Their recitation was a powerful affirmation of the courage and adaptability these children exhibit daily.

Guest speakers included the Commanding Officer of Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi and the NAF Atsugi Military Youth of the Year. Their speeches underscored the importance of recognizing and supporting military families, and their words were met with heartfelt applause.

As the Month of the Military Child continues, SLES has planned a variety of events and activities to celebrate and support their military-connected students. This opening ceremony was a beautiful and meaningful start to what promises to be a memorable month.

Shirley Lanham Elementary School’s dedication to its students and their families is evident in the thoughtful planning and execution of this ceremony. The school community’s unwavering support for military children is a shining example of the values that define SLES.
