USO Yokosuka to keep sailor busy with 'activity baskets'
Lt. j.g. Samuel Hardgrove, USS Barry Public Affairs November 24, 2020
Each year USO Yokosuka hosts a Thanksgiving meal for our service members, a holiday tradition that our USO Yokosuka staff, volunteers and our community look forward to year after year. Unfortunately, out of an abundance of caution due to COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our annual meal. But our service members are still at the forefront of our minds this holiday season!
USO Yokosuka will provide “activity baskets” to the ships that are in port at Yokosuka Naval Base. The baskets will include items that will hopefully help sailors pass the time over the long weekends and holidays, including footballs, frisbees, board games, playing cards and more. These activity baskets are for the ships’ crews to enjoy while in port and perhaps even while underway, and we hope they will help bring the crew together in the spirit of the holidays.
This is a different way to celebrate Thanksgiving in the time of COVID. These activities will help sailors pass the time, build morale and camaraderie over the holiday weekend and beyond. The USO staff members are working with ombudsmen and leadership to deliver the baskets directly to the ships in port.
