Winter brings first snowfall in Misawa

While most of mainland Japan is currently enjoying gorgeous autumn leaves and weather, Misawa Air Base and the entire Aomori Prefecture has had its first layer of winter snow for the season. Yoshihito Morita, a Misawa Commissary employee, sent us this photo taken Nov. 27 of the first snow in his city Tohokucho, which is near the air base.

According to Morita, the 35-degree Fahrenheit weather brought the first snow of the region 17 days later than last year and 20 days later than the average. Now that the autumn leaves are gone, Morita said his garden is looking bare but piled with snow.

The first snowfalls herald the arrival of a long, severe winter in Misawa. The region is expected to stay in the cold season until the end of April. Stay safe and warm, Misawa!
