While most of mainland Japan is currently enjoying the gorgeous autumn leaves, the northern region including Aomori Prefecture and Misawa Air Base are getting their first snowflakes of the season.

Yoshihito Morita of the Misawa Commissary sent us photos of the first snow dusting his home in Tohokucho Town on Nov. 18 and Misawa AB. He said the temperature in Tohokucho Town (near Misawa) was minus 1 degree Celsius and he saw the first snowfall at his town 12 days earlier than last year.

According to the Aomori Meteorological Agency, as of 7 p.m. on Nov. 18, 114 centimeters of snowfall had been observed at Sukayu SPA, with 12 centimeters reported in Aomori and Hirosaki Cities in the prefecture.

Morita said he must get up around 4 a.m. to shovel the snow throughout the snow season.

The first snowfall heralds the arrival of a long winter in Misawa. The region is expected to stay in the cold season until the end of April. Stay safe and warm, Misawa!
