We are finally in one of Japan’s most beautiful seasons. All around us the green forests, mountains and landscape are transforming into fiery crimson and vibrant orange hues. But to find the iconic fall imagery you see in books and magazines, Karuizawa Town in Nagano Prefecture and Kusatsu Onsen hot spring resort in Gunma Prefecture are two of the best places to go.

Both are within driving distance from the Kanto Plain and offer scenic strolling and breathtaking autumn colors.

Shiraitonotaki Falls, located between the two towns, is another must-see attraction, as its countless waterfalls and gorgeous foliage are a beautiful sight.

At the end of your autumn color hunting, don’t miss soaking in the hot springs at Kusatsu Onsen, historically deemed as one of the best three in the country since the 15th century. The hot springs in Kusatsu are rich in minerals and will warm up your body after a long-day of strolling and driving.

There’s no better time to get to know your host nation than when the weather is great and the trees are dressed up for the fall season!
