Oirase Mountain Stream in the northern portion of Japan’s mainland, offers superb scenic views of pristine forest and crystal-clear waters. The area is known as one of the country’s most beautiful to visit.

You’ll find this picture-perfect winter location in the central mountainous region of Aomori Pref., about a one-hour drive from Misawa Air Base.

In the fall, the stream draws many visitors for a look at the brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange leaves around late October through early November. However, this area can be enjoyed and appreciated for the beautiful and serene landscapes it brings year-round.

The wintertime at Oirase is like stepping into a winter postcard with thick snow, lush forest and crystal clear rushing waters. During this season, many of the waterfalls in the gorge are frozen creating magnificent ice pillars you have to see to believe.

As of March 1, visitors can drive through the pristine forest along well-paved roads which run along the stream, as roads are being cleared periodically to ensure safe travel, the Towada-Oirase Tourist Center said.
