As the summer heat picks up around Japan, you may wonder where you should go to enjoy this scorching season. In and around the Kanto Plain, try going for a nice ride aboard the Isumi Rail, a scenic train on the hilly terrain of central Chiba Prefecture.

The rail was originally constructed for commuters and school students in 1930. Soon, however, as ridership slowed, the Isumi Rail faced financial difficulties and was at risk of being shuttered.

Today, the railway is experiencing a new life as a scenic train perfect for visitors and enthusiastic train fans. As the Isumi Rail trains run very slowly, you can enjoy peaceful views from wide windows on the train very closely.

I recommend hopping on the train at Kazusanakano Station after parking your car at the free parking lot there. A train arrives once every hour, so be sure not to miss your train!

Let the tiny yellow train transport you into the rich, green forest for views of the valley, rice fields and surrounding ranches.

Hop off at Otaki Station where the traditional feel of the area is preserved in the homes and roads leading to the majestic Otaki Castle. You can also rent a bike at the station to make your exploring a little easier and fun.

Before you head back to Kazusanakano Station, sample some tasty wagashi sweets at Tsuchiya Confectionary or grab a souvenir at the Toyonotsuru Brewery near the station.

All aboard— For a fun summer day trip in Chiba your family will love!
