Aizu region in Fukushima Prefecture is home to many historical sites. Tsurugajo Castle, Nishinkan School and Oyakuen Herb Garden have a long history and heritage involving the area’s former samurai warriors. Although Aizu’s warriors were strong and glorious this region also has a sad history where the young warriors of Byakkotai and the families of high-ranking samurais took their lives as a symbol of dignity before the oncoming enemy invasion. Aizu locals are proud of the history, and believe it has formed their well-disciplined and perseverant personality.
