The northern section of the Honshu mainland is finally transforming into a pink wonderland with the arrival of the season’s cherry blossoms. Misawa Air Base and surrounding areas are now enjoying the favorite time of the season.

In Misawa City, the Chuo and Nakayoshi Parks are hosting nightly illuminations so you can enjoy a nice evening walk under the bright yozakura cherry blossom trees. You have until May 5 to enjoy the illuminations, according to the Misawa City Tourist Bureau.

Towada Central Park field is a 30-minute drive from Misawa AB and is the setting for the Sakura Yabusame, an annual event featuring female archers on horseback. The event which was held on April 24,25 and 27, brought female archers of all ages and expertise to compete in beautiful kimonos while riding horses along a 660-foot course. Every year, hundreds gather to see this event and though it’s over now, make plans to catch this interesting event next April!

And, don’t forget to make plans to get out and enjoy the cherry blossoms— they’re gone just as quickly as they arrive! Happy spring, Misawa!
