A two-hour drive from Misawa AB is where you’ll find the leaves shining bright like diamonds!

Lake Towada, along with Mt. Hakkoda and Oirase Streams, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Aomori Prefecture. This area is a great spot for when you’re looking to go out the gate and take in the spectacular scenery. The fall season here is especially famous due to the brilliant red, yellows and oranges the trees put on during this time of year contrasting the crystal blue waters of the impressive lake.

It’s already November and now is the best time to appreciate the colored trees and forests at this popular attraction. The ongoing special illumination project “FeStA LuCe 2021-2022” makes the autumn colors in this popular tourist attraction even more special.

“I was actually overwhelmed by the wonderful illumination,” Yoshihito Morita of Misawa Commissary said of his recent visit to Lake Towada. “It definitely worth joining the event,” he said.

According to Morita, the moderate temperatures at night mean it isn’t too cold to make it out for the illuminations. Expect many people, so make sure to plan ahead and avoid the crowds.

If you are on or around Misawa, don’t miss the chance and visit there to enjoy the gorgeous autumn colors in illumination, as it is only within a two-hour-drive from the base.

If you’re not able to make it out to the current illumination by Nov. 23, don’t worry! The lake transforms to its winter illumination “The story of Winter in Light” starting Dec. 4 through Feb. 20.

During the winter portion in December, visitors can also look forward to beautiful fireworks displays on weekends and holidays starting at 8 p.m.
