August marks the anniversary of the end of the Pacific War, and for many Japanese, it is a time to remember those who were lost in the conflict at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo.
Every year the shrine holds Mitama Matsuri, a Spirit Consolation ceremony from July 13 to 16.
Since it was established in 1947, the Mitama Matsuri has consoled the enshrined spirits of those who have died in service to Japan from conflicts even prior to World War II.
According to the shrine, the annual event draws in 100,000 visitors every year. This is also one of the rare opportunities to visit the shrine in the evening hours.
The event features 30,000 bonbori lanterns with prayers and consolation are decorated across the grounds. Memorial lanterns cost 5,000 yen.
During this period, performances including traditional dances, such as Awa Odori and Aomori Nebuta, brass band and wadaiko drums are scheduled. Festival food booths are also available.
