A 20-minute drive from Yokosuka Naval Base, Nojima Island in the Hirakata Gulf features a large park, historical buildings and cave, as well as a residential area that accommodates hundreds of houses. From the observatory platform at the peak of island, you get a beautiful view of the gulf as well as the large public park along the shore, which is a good spot to enjoy barbecue, camping and other outdoor activities. Fortunately, it is connected to mainland by several bridges, so you can easily visit the island. And now is a good great time to go!

On the island, tens of thousands of hydrangeas are currently at their peak, and I had the opportunity to check them out June 12. Simply beautiful and a great photo op.

And while you’re on the island, don’t miss a historical attraction, villa of Hirobumi Ito, home to the nation’s first prime minister.

The large wooden villa with thatched roof was built on the island in 1898 and showcases a typical Japanese traditional-style villa building from the era.

In the villa, there is an exhibit about Prime Minister Ito, and you can also enjoy a panoramic view of the gulf and impressive garden. On my visit, a vase of hydrangeas was placed on a low table in a spacious tatami room, adding a touch of traditional atmosphere and seasonal beauty. It was enjoyable viewing the beautiful vista of Hirakata Gulf with hydrangeas in a classical-looking villa.  

We are in tsuyu rainy season, but its hydrangea season, so head to Nojima Island for some seasonal beauty.
