As many of Honshu region’s mountains and forests are starting to transition into their autumn hues, up north in Aomori Prefecture, the colors have already reached peak yellows, oranges and reds.

Yoshihito Morita, a Misawa Commissary employee, said the maple leaves on base are a vibrant crimson.

Although the recent rains and increased bear sightings in the area have kept him and other locals away from the hiking trails, Morita said the colors of fall in the city are enough for him.

“Although we won’t go hiking in the forest this year, the beautiful maple leaves in reddish and orange colors on the base are so gorgeous. A reminder that the monotonous winter is just around the corner,” Morita added.

As the fall sweeps southward along Japan’s mainland, small signs are starting to reach the Kanto Plain and beyond. Stay safe and like Morita don’t forget to stop and appreciate the stunning season while it lasts.
