Cashiers are missing at this new souvenir shop at Haneda Airport in Japan

The future of retail shopping has arrived in Japan!

Starting August 27, if you’re flying out of Haneda Airport’s Terminal 2, you’ll want to keep an eye out for this unique unmanned souvenir shop. That’s right – unmanned!

Much like the Amazon staff-less stores popping up in major cities in the States, the ANA FESTA GO souvenir shop allows customers to enter the sales space without having to interact with employees.

According to ANA, at this small shop you’ll be able to purchase a variety of confectionery, food items and souvenirs.

To enter the store, pass through a sensor gate. The sensor gate ensures there are no more than 10 customers shopping inside at a time. To make a purchase, pick up the items you want to buy and stand in the payment area. A computer screen will show the items detected. After confirmation, pay for your items with cash, card or Suica or PASMO train cards. Bag your purchase and head on out the exit gate.

This futuristic shopping experience cuts down in operation costs, eases the stress of paying at the register and addresses new concerns for shoppers seeking contactless payment.

In addition, if you are an ANA Mileage Club member or and ANA credit card holder, you can earn points for your purchase inside ANA FESTA GO.
