Throughout the ‘70s, the Carpenters, a sibling musical duo starring Richard and Karen Carpenter were enormously popular across generations in Japan. When I think back to the age, I remember when I walked down the street or stepped into a café, I could always hear Karen’s warm gentle voice and the nostalgic melodies everywhere.
The musical duo debuted in 1969 with the album “Offering” and the single “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” released the following year, became a No. 1 hit in the U.S., instantly making them stars. The Carpenters would go on to sell over 100 million copies worldwide and win three Grammy Awards.
Despite Karen Carpenter’s sudden death in 1983, the duo’s music can still be heard in films and commercials and fans continue to play their songs all over the world.
Ken Ogasawara, a Hanamaki native who used to work as a graphic designer at Stars and Stripes’ headquarters in Tokyo, is one of those loyal, lifelong Carpenters fans. For years, Ogasawara eagerly collected the duo’s albums and memorabilia. His vast collection of the Carpenters albums and memorabilia has often been used for Japanese media clips.
Ogasawara is sharing his special collection with an audience at “Rediscovering the Carpenters on Vinyl,” an upcoming listening event at Nishiogi 3313 Analog Tengoku in Tokyo on Feb. 28.
Ogasawara said he will use original vinyl records, instead of digitally remastered CDs to focus on Karen’s singing voice.
“Perhaps due to the deterioration of the original master tapes, the recently remastered CDs do not have as good acoustic quality than that of the original vinyl records,” he said.
Ogasawara said he also plans to play recordings by the Richard Carpenter Trio, a jazz ensemble featuring Karen on drums prior to the siblings’ debut as The Carpenters.
Karen also made recordings as a solo singer and Ogasawara has discovered a couple of unreleased Carpenters recordings from early years of their activity in his vast collection – a Karen’s solo album in 1969 and a single recorded where Richard plays the piano in 1967.
Ogasawara’s collection is impressive and the event is a celebration of music talent and his devotion to his favorite group.
