Taste of Japan: Grab some udon near Camp Zama

If you’re in the mood for a new spot to enjoy some delicious udon noodles, check out Shirasasa Udon Tanaka in Hadano City. The restaurant uses spring water straight from the Tanazawa Mountains for their noodles and they do not use any additives for their delicious noodles.

You’ll find Shirasasa Udon Tanaka, about a 45-minute drive from Camp Zama, inside an old, renovated Japanese farmhouse hidden behind the beautiful foliage near Shirasasa Shrine. When you go inside the restaurant, it looks like old Japan, and it makes you feel as if you are part of the environment and the culture.

I arrived with my wife at 11 a.m. (opening time) and there was already a line of customers patiently waiting. Though there was only one western-style table in the nearly-full restaurant, we opted to sit at a less-crowded Japanese-style table, which was a little difficult for me.

We ordered oden and it arrived in an extra-large portion with plenty of vegetables, eggs and other ingredients. We also ordered udon, which arrived with a side of mustard, special miso and big chucks of daikon. The daikon for the udon was so big and delicious I ate two of them. For my udon order, I went with the tomato and cheese one. It’s served very hot in a beautiful serving bowl, and it will just knock your socks off.

After you’ve eaten at this place and enjoyed the comfort, you will want to write your own story to tell others about it. There is only parking for six cars, so you may have to wait if you drive there, but it’s well worth the wait. You can also park at the Shirasa Shrine parking lot.

Make plans to enjoy some real traditional Japanese food.
