Superb tempura lunch in Namamugi, Yokohama

When you visit Namamugi, be sure to drop by an excellent tempura restaurant for lunch. Ajiwarabe Tenkin is a well-known Japanese restaurant, featuring tasty tempura, seafood and eel dishes.

Although the three-storied shop has a somewhat high-end look, you can enjoy its tasty dishes for a reasonable price during lunch time.

It has a typical Japanese looking interior, and a classical but cozy atmosphere.

My wife and I ordered the tempura lunch set for a reasonable 1,700 yen ($17). The set came with two large shrimp, two white fish (whiting and flathead), conger, eggplant and green pepper, along with rice, miso soup and pickles. The tempura batter seemed a little thicker than typical tempura to me, but it was still very crispy and the ingredients were very hot and tasty. The concentrated taste of fish and vegetables covered by gold batter really went well with the soy sauce based dipping broth.

According to a staffer, Ajiwarabe Tenikin uses local fish for the tempura, so you know it’s fresh.
