Did you know?: Kumamoto's specialty food basashi

Near Sasebo Naval Base in Kumamoto Prefecture, there is a “specialty” food called basashi. This thinly-sliced meat is actually raw horse, and  it’s an indispensable munchie at izakaya bars. Usually served nearfrozen, the meat is typically dipped in soy sauce with grinded garlic or wasabi (horseradish). So, the next time you’re at a bar and you’re feeling risky, or maybe you’ve had a couple, order up this Japanese  “specialty.”
