For many students, Field Day is a highlight signaling the end of the year. This year, due to COVID-19 prevention measures, it was impossible for the event to take place.

However, Phys. Ed. Instructors Robert Garcia and David Marchetti from Yokosuka Middle School and Beau Veazey from Yokota Middle School, collaborated together to create a “Virtual Field Day.” The event was a way for students to enjoy the competition and take part in activities open to them, their families, and teachers at both schools.

Virtual Field Day kicked off on Apr. 29 and involved students completing the tasks on their own time. The fitness challenges included planking and push-ups, which required no special equipment. Minute-to-Win-It games, were another challenge, but these required materials accessed easily at home. The field day also held group fitness classes hosted online so students could participate together from their own homes.

The program was set on an honors system as the students submitted their own scorecards, Garcia said.

This was also a rare opportunity for students from both bases to interact and compete in a non-formal setting.

“Our hope was, by opening Virtual Field Day to both schools, we would have increased participation and generate some of that end-of-year excitement. It was certainly a success,” Garcia added.

The Virtual Field Day had over 200 submissions and helped encouraged fitness among students while allowing interaction with their peers from home. We may struggle in these times, but events such as this Virtual Field Day brighten everyone’s’ spirits and inspire us to stay healthy and happy.
