Yokosuka students ring in Stars Wars Day with online competition

Students at Yokosuka Middle School are keeping busy with virtual schooling. Whether participating in science projects and experiments in their kitchens at home, preparing for a video conference with a Holocaust Survivor, performing virtually with the school band and choir, or discussing United Nations Sustainable Development Goals with students across the globe, the middle schoolers have lots to do. But they’ve also managed to find a bit of fun, too.

Every year, students and staff gather to celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4 for “May the 4th Be with You.” This year, however, the celebration moved online keeping students safe and families engaged while continuing to foster a sense of community within the school.

Students, family members, and staff were invited to submit images, audio, or video that reflected a Star Wars theme to share online.  Each student who participated earned a special “Star Wars badge” in Schoology, their online learning management system, and special bragging rights will go to the school team with the most participants and the most entries.

Asked why she participated even though she is not a serious Star Wars fan, 7th-grader Reese L. replied, “I participated because it was a good opportunity to get creative in the middle of this crisis. It's also nice to know that we brought a smile to someone's face because of our nerdiness and fandom.”

The Star Wars celebration didn’t end on May 4 for some students.  Members of the Library Club decided to continue their “May the 4th Be with You” nod to the popular franchise by celebrating “Revenge of the Fifth” Day (a reference to “Revenge of the Sith” and other Star Wars villains).
