TOKYO, Japan — University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) in Asia will honor 161 graduates at its Tokyo Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the New Sanno Hotel, Tokyo, Japan.
The ceremony marks a milestone year — UMGC in Asia’s 70th anniversary of serving U.S. servicemembers and the military community throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The commencement address will be delivered by Jay A. Perman, MD, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland. Dr. Perman became the fifth chancellor of the USM in January 2020, overseeing 12 universities and three regional higher education centers enrolling more than 170,000 students, and conferring nearly eight in every 10 bachelor’s degrees awarded in Maryland.
As chancellor, Dr. Perman is committed to advancing higher education affordability and ensuring access for all Maryland students. Under his leadership, the USM has grown enrollment among underrepresented minority students, improved retention and completion rates, and increased institutional aid for students in need. He has also strengthened the USM’s reputation for innovation in teaching, community engagement, and research — with R&D funding surpassing $1.5 billion and significant growth in invention disclosures, licenses, and startups.
