Competition increases for 2015 DoDEA Pacific “Mathletes”

OKINAWA, Japan — More than 80 students from 22 DoDEA Pacific schools in Japan, Okinawa and South Korea participated in the MATHCOUNTS 2015 Pacific Chapter Competition on Feb. 4.

MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program that is designed to inspire sixth through eighth grade students toward higher academic achievement in mathematics.  Furthermore, it encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology and math.
 
MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. According to a MATHCOUNTS press release, more than 125,000 students representing more than 7,000 schools register annually to participate in MATHCOUNTS programs.
 
Each participating school’s team of four students is challenged by a variety of mathematics problems in algebra, geometry and discreet math. This year, the contest was administered via three written assessment sessions.  These assessments were then sent to the DoDEA Pacific MATHCOUNTS facilitator, Denise Hudson, who serves as the DoDEA Guam District secondary math and science instruction system specialist.

“This is the first year that all Pacific school students in grades six to eight were encouraged to participate,” said Hudson. “This resulted in an additional seven elementary schools being added to our participating middle schools this year.”

DoDEA Pacific and DoDEA Europe, recognized as one state by MATHCOUNTS, will hold a joint state competition March 19 to determine top qualifiers. The individual and team state-level winners will move on to compete in the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition May 7-10 in Boston.
