YOKOSUKA, Japan –The crew of the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) remains mission ready and focused on operations due to the proactive implementation of prevention policies regarding novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The command has utilized health protections to ensure the safety of its crew and limit the spread of germs, including precautionary medical screening questionnaires when entering and exiting the ship, increased sanitization especially in high traffic areas, and social distancing techniques.

“From day one, every member of the crew has shown up ready to do their part in the fight against COVID-19,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Nathan Dejager, the Independent Duty Corpsman aboard Mustin.

These programs have directly attributed to the health and safety of the crew.

Sailors aboard Mustin continue to focus on their duties at sea. Drills and training exercises are conducted to ensure readiness for operational tasking.

“It takes a tough breed of Sailor to do what we do out here in the 7th Fleet,” said Dejager. “I serve alongside these warriors who are ready to get underway early and often, and all I can think of is how extremely proud I am to be counted as one of them.”

This mission-focused mindset has led many sailors to standout as leaders among their peers. Within the past few months, the USS Mustin promoted several sailors through the Meritorious Advancement Program due to their exceptional service while onboard.

“The Sailors of Mustin Nation continue to inspire me each and every day. Even in the toughest of times, everyone on board knows their role and executes their duties in order to keep our fine ship clean, healthy, and in top condition,” said Command Master Chief Troy Bojorquiz. “We are a Mustin Nation family here and rely on one another day in and day out to get the mission done.”

Mustin is underway conducting operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific while assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s largest principal force.
